Did you vote?

I did.  Last Saturday. And I left feeling hopeful. Again.  Though I'm just as nervous as I was two years ago.  I'm not feeling very eloquent lately, but I feel like I have to write this down.  It frightens me when people (and I use that as a broad generalization) want to enforce their beliefs on others.  That their way is the "right" way.  I feel I'm a pretty open-minded person.  Someone who doesn't take issue with differences of opinion.  We all come from different backgrounds and have different perspectives.  And you know what? That's okay.  But when the proverbial "you" wants to take away or limit personal liberties in the name of freedom? I have problems with that.  Do I think that government in general is too big? Yes.  I'm all too familiar with the red tape of bureaucracy.  My dad was in the Public Health Service.  T has been part of the military for the last 12 years.  T's also been part of the state government for the past 4 years.  There are problems, deep problems, but not ones that can be solved by trusting that people will "do the right thing".  Because the prevalence of people who believe "every man for himself" scares me.  I do have faith in individuals, but to quote Tommy Lee Jones in MIB

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."

I understand that politicians speak to the public and tell them what they want to hear.  I get that. But when the message is negative and ignorant, I have a problem with that.  Yes, I live in Nevada and there has been a serious showdown between "the good old boy" and "change".  But the change is not the type touted by our President in his campaign of telling us what the proverbial "we" wanted to hear.  I wanted change and hope and something to look forward to.for.everyone.  Not just a select group of our community but for humanity as a whole.

So tomorrow after my 8-mile run, I will come home and watch the returns on the elections here in Nevada as well as around the country.  I will hope that we, as a state and country, can continue to progress to allowing common sense and logic to reign free.

This picture from The Rally to Restore Sanity sums it up for me.

  1. I'll definitely be heading to the polls tomorrow. I agree completely with what you said. I hope we continue on a path to progress for everyone, not just a select few. LOVE the sign! LOL

  2. I voted today, and am not so hopeful 45 minutes after polls closed. I just don't know if I have a great feeling about what's going down tonight (in my area.)

  4. I love Tommy Lee Jones. And the freedom to vote. Don't always love the election results, but hey - that's the way it goes sometimes.
