The Bieber fan club

Did I get your attention? MizFit tweeted the other day that her 5yo said she wanted to marry Justin Bieber. And then she lost a bunch of followers. Which I found funny. Am I the only one who remembers playing tag in kindergarten but the point was to catch a boy and kiss him. That sounds so scandalous in today's world of Tiaras and Tantrums where society sexualizes anything and everything.  I also remember having a crush on a boy when I was 10.  And it was innocent.  He was the son of family friends, and since our families hung out together a lot, I got to hang out with him.  He was nice to me.  And funny.

My first real butterflies-in-my-tummy crush happened when I was 12.  It, too, was innocent.  I was shy and awkward and there was no way I was going to *do* anything about this crush.  I do admit that the society I was in up until I was 11 did not really support or revolve around pop culture and the media blitz that is an every day occurrence here in the U.S. today.  (I will also admit that in 7th grade there were rumors about a couple girls having sex.  I remember being amazed and horrified because I couldn't imagine being comfortable enough with a boy I liked to talk to him in public let alone get nekkid with him.)

I have three girls.  The oldest has Beiber fever.  *shudder*.  The middle girl is trying to keep up and has stated that she has a crush on Logan Lerman who plays Percy Jackson.  My little one just giggles at the whole conversation about crushes.

But you know what? I love knowing that my girls are willing to talk to both myself and T about their crushes.  They know we will tease them a bit and make them blush, but they can talk to us about it.

Childhood crushes are not a bad thing.  It's when you don't have an open dialogue with your kids that bad things can happen.

  1. I'm glad your girls are open with you. Hopefully that continues for the times when it is more than just a Bieber crush.

  2. Sammy loves that Baby, Baby song. At least when I sing it. It's cute. Jerrod is NOT amused! :)

  3. That is funny! Blog followers seem to be a fickle bunch. It's great your girls are open with you; I have two of my own and that is the key isn't it? Being able to listen to them and then guide them through life as they grow!

  4. I agree. And sweet, childish crushes are so much a part of growing up. I had such a crush on the older brother of a friend in second grade. I still remember what a thrill it was to see him. (He was probably 10!)

  5. Innocence is lost way too soon these days. K1 has a girlfriend. He has had one every year for the past 3 years. All different because he was in different schools. It's cute. It's sweet. And it's totally harmless.

  6. Dave and I talk with the kids all the time about the crushes we had growing up. Jake has a sweet little crush right now on a girl in another class and Emma has already broken up with two boys who were "just too mean".
